Well, you probably want to go for the most practical thing. Here at the graveyard, I was issued a 9mm standard glock. Actually, I have that one, and the other one the guard shoved in my hands as he ran off screaming. Aside from that, I like the revolver magnum. It's classic, old school, and actually feels more like a tool (as it should - guns aren't toys!). Aside from that, I have a few 'pretties' stashed around, just in case things get too out of hand here.

Aside from this, YES, it is absolutely vital to have some bludgeoning or slicing weapons handy. You have to be careful with that, however. Since when dispatching of certain zombie types, you want to avoid as much splash & splatter as possible, otherwise it's no different than you getting yerself bitten, capice?

The more range you can get, the better... so actually I would recommend a halberd type weapon or even a long spear if you can manage to have decent accuracy jabbing & stabbing with it (go for the head, works like a charm).

Also do you guys think that chainmail shirt with some good steel toe boots would be good armor for fighting the undead

Most definitely!
Especially if you've got good iron sights on it, or even better a scope if you can get a hold of one.

Better far than close, when it comes to these things.

Chain Mail is not a bad idea, however, the big danger with that is if you get wounded and you're in the mix with the rot bags, your chances of infection are greatly increased, as the fluids would easily seep through the mail.

Your better bet is swat type gear, or any solid armor you can get a hold of.

One of my favourite ideas is to make makeshift armor from hard plastics! Lightweight, and TOUGH to bite through, and you can easily 'solder' the right plastics together as well. So you can easily create fitted and overlapping parts to compliment additional tough leather material you can use for the more flexible areas (such as elbow joints)

Plus this way you would not be so vulnereable to infection via 'hot' body fluids.

Just keep in mind that close quarters combat with these things should always be a last resort, though.
Especially in numbers!
